Today was challenging as we visited the Family Social Service Administration or FSSA. We were told this was likely our only option to cover BJ's medical expenses over and above his $1,000,000 lifetime maximum from our health coverage. We exceeded that max by a long way, and are prayerful that this coverage will help. However, The FSSA office does not think we will qualify to receive this.

We know none of this is a surprise to our Lord, and we trust He will help us work this out. WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR DONATIONS. We are only posting this so that you will once again join us as we lift this before the Throne of Grace, seeking His wisdom. We know that He will provide in this situation. It is most discouraging to deal with these kinds of issues at a time like this.

On the lighter side, whether you agree with Beej's words or not, I think you can understand what he is driving at:

"To best glorify God, first you must contradict your own self love, self righteousness, and self aspirations."

Be blessed family,

dad

Brent and Deanna,
I will be praying that the medical expenses will be taken care of. The Lord knows your need before we ask and He shall answer beyond what we can comprehend. Though I haven't had the magnitude of your expenses , I do know that God will meet and go beyond what we ask.

When everything seems overwhelming, take a step back, breath, and look outside at God's wonders of the world.
Keep looking until you see something brings a smile to your face.
I pray for your family to receive help with medical bills. That must feel overwhelming and distracting from your grieving and natural time needed to heal.
I pray God protects you and guides you with an abundance of strength.

I know this is such a hard time and to have a burden like this is all the more painful. And to know that you might not "qualify" is frustrating and disheartening! But you are so right, the Lord knows what you need, and when you will need it. He will provide one way or another. And you will be praising the Lord once again!!! I will pray for you in this, and everything else, as always. Remember, each hurdle only brings you even closer to the Lord! We love you and are with you always. And if you need anything, please, don't hesitate to ask. That is what the body is for... to help one another...even finacially!! God bless you today..and always!

"[12] Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here."

[13] He replied, "You give them something to eat."

They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish--unless we go and buy food for all this crowd." [14] (About five thousand men were there.)

But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each." [15] The disciples did so, and everybody sat down. [16] Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people. [17] They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over."

God knows your needs and promises to provide. I am praying for you and this seemingly overwhelming financial burden. May God multiply your finances and provide for all of your needs.

Continuing in prayer!

family,

thank you for sharing your burdens with us so we can bring them before our gracious Father who does in fact provide what we need. i can only imagine how hard it must be to deal with these expenses so soon. He will provide and we will glorify Him no matter how He chooses to do so!
we have experienced much of His provision thru church family for our adoption yet He continues to stretch our faith. He will do the same for you.
i continue to pray for each of you emotionally as i know you miss your precious bj. i also will keep praying for the decisions that continue to come your way.
you all are in my thoughts several times a day and i have learned so much about faith from you. you have become like family and i thank you for sharing bj's journals which never cease to amaze and challenge me.

we also hold michael and sara leaf up in prayer as they go forward and take on the challenge they commited to last week. may God give them the boldness and faith they saw in bj's life.

Brent and Deanna,

I love this verse, Philippians 4:6, Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known to God. I know during this time it will be hard not to worry but God tells us not to worry, that He has already taken care of all of our needs not just some of them and I am sure He will carry you through this troubling time. I am sure you remember the poem Footprints, I read this daily because I have to tell myself that God is going to take me through my bad times with my health. I only pray that I can meet God like BJ has, it would be the greatest gift I could ever imagine. However, God is keeping me here for some reason, even though I struggle with a chronic disease that leaves me in unbearable pain most of the time. There is no cure for this disease, well, the doctors say there isn't but I know God can heal me in His time and if He doesn't then He is doing that for a reason some day He may reveal to me. I praise God each time I minister to someone with this same disease and assure them that there is peace in my heart knowing that when I leave this world I will live an eternity in Heaven.

My prayers are with you and your family, keep the faith, I have really enjoyed the posts you have put on this site. I read it daily and comment when I can depending on my pain level. My family is remembering you daily in prayer. Keep the faith, you have been such an inspiration to us all.

A little housekeeping first, please: The Celebration Service audio/video link is just below the green "Profile" of BJ, to the right of the updates we all look forward to so eagerly. If you're like me, you haven't looked at that side for a while! It's changed a bit since BJ's promotion into glory.

Below the link to the Celebration service are some addresses/ways you can donate. No, Brent clearly WASN'T asking--but that information was already there, and if God so moves, ways to help have been listed.

Below THOSE links, you will see the link to the famous pink (and black) T-shirts along with other pertinent stuff. Although fundraisers may be an option, this one is already in place through the kindness of Awe Star. The money from each shirt sold goes to help with this overwhelming medical bill, and the witnessing opportunities, as we've already seen again and again, make the shirt an incredible investment!

Now--on to the real thing!
Father God, this looks like a YOU-sized task to me, too. We have used this blog to encourage one another to follow You fully, to ask You to show Yourself strong on the Higgins' behalf. This is another opportunity for us to acknowledge Your total authority, strength, and power in a situation that none of us can "fix." Not by our might, not by our power, but certainly, certainly by Your Spirit, Oh God!

We know You are no respecter of persons (or qualifications) and that You are "so not" challenged by what seems to us like an overwhelming burden. We wait for you, oh God! Sustain Brent, Deanna, Lauren and Whitney through this time--and make Your ways known to even more people because of the way you take care of this.

We love you, Lord. We celebrate Your presence in BJ's life, and we celebrate Your power as we see it expressed in His family. Keep them in Your perfect peace and comfort each one with Your always-tender mercies. In your name we pray, our dear Savior--

AMEN

O.K., I lied--but not on purpose! Please forgive me.

The link for the Celebration Service IS directly below BJ's profile. THEN (going down) comes the link for the amazing T-shirts (pictures and everything!). THEN (down again) are a few more BJ links, including "Why BJ?" (I'd highly recommend reading this, both for your own understanding and for the possibility that you may need to answer questions like this one day). THEN (just below) are the links for donations!

Right idea, wrong order. Perhaps I have vertical dyslexia?
Thanks again--

We are praying that all your needs will be met...taking care of the medical expenses as well as your personal needs.

When we had our son Daniel his bills exceeded his lifetime max in 2 months time. He was in the hospital for 7 1/2 months and the bills were extensive. Is FSSA the same as applying for Medicaid? We were able to receive Medicaid with our son, but the department was through Human Services. Does the hospital have a program called
H-cap? These were 2 areas that we were able to receive help with our sons bills.

There was one other area that God used to provide for our bills...that was through God's people. When people know there is a need...God uses them to be a blessing. I had a difficult time with that. I wanted to be the one giving...not receiving. Oh what a blessing it is when we give and God knows our hearts. I am praying that the people who read these blogs will come together and send whatever amount they are able. Even the smallest of gifts adds up.

My husband and I pastor a small church. We will be taking up a love offering for you this Sunday and I pray that God will multiply it. He will meet this need. Your hearts are so heavy with the loss of BJ...I pray that this need be met quickly so that this is one less burden you have to carry.

Know that you are in our prayers daily.

Dear Higgins Family:

Our daughter came home from her Christian school in North Carolina and asked us to pray for a boy named BJ who had become ill while on a mission's trip to Peru. We did pray for this special request, for like BJ, a year ago I had gone to Peru on a mission's trip where my brother [and family] serves as mission's director. This request became very real and personal to me. We continued to pray, and then discovered BJ was related to our friend's, the Renfroes. What a small world. The day BJ went to be with Jesus, I received an e-mail from my best friend in Indiana asking me to pray for the family of a young man named BJ [ill from a mission's trip to Peru]who had passed that morning. It turns out that many of the public elementary school teachers had been to a music conference in Indiana, and were praying for BJ. This was a God thing. There are no coincidences in Christ. The body was called on to pray, and in obedience to our Heavenly Father, BJ and your family were lifted up from around the world.

Beth shared with me tonight that people all over the world were praying for BJ and your family. Praise be to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Please accept our deepest sympathy in the loss of your dear son, for I know you will miss him very much. How very precious it has been to read about his life and the tremendous impact he had on those around him. What a legacy he leaves.

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And when you walk through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you." Is 43:2 "I can do everything through him who gives me strength." Phil 4:13

May the peace of our Lord be yours today and always.

A friend introduced me to your website a few days ago, and I find myself constantly checking back into your site. It has moved me in so many ways and further encouraged me to lay down my life day after day for our Lord's glory. Your son seemed to be an incredible young man and there is no doubt in my mind that God has received much glory from BJ's life. His story has inspirted me to truly become dedicated to my personal ministry. My prayers are with you all. It is so encouraging to read such gracious words from you in such a hard time. God Bless every one of you. I know the Lord will provide for you and your family and I will continue to lift it up to the Lord.

Dear Higgins,

I have been praying for you all as you face what each day has in store for you. The unpleasantness of the "stuff" you have to face must be overwhelming at times. I am praying for you to be able to sense the presence and power of the Lord as you go through days without precious BJ and have so many decisions to make.

I want you to know how special it was to watch the video of the remberance service. I was very happy to hear BJ's voice during the Christmas play... How fitting that he should be sharing the Godd News! I was very blessed to see him getting baptised.

God is really speaking to me so much lately about why He has left me here on earth. I'm so much more mindful of sharing Jesus. Everyday I read Acts 20:24 so God will burn it in my heart once more to share Jesus as I go.

God will channel HIs resources to you for the medical expenses. This such a "little thing" to Him, isn't it? My family is praying for you daily.

Praying you through pain,
Lynne in Gray,Ga.

My little brother was born very early and was in icu for 60 days. My dad had a good point when it came to the final bill. If it would have been 20 or 30 thousand, then yes my dad would have been worried because that is an amount that you can pay back, but when the total came Dad said look, this is so crazy. I will never be able to pay this back in my lifetime. All I can do is pay you 20 dollars a month. At that, they cant do anything. It is not possible for a normal person to write a check for a million dollars, so the hospitals take what they can get.
Don't worry. I've seen how the Lord works when it come to stuff like this. We are still lifting all of you up every day throught the day.

I heard this on the radio today, and it seems to fit:

Believe Me Now - Steven Curtis Chapman

I watch you looking out across the raging water
So sure your only hope lies on the other side
You hear the enemy that's closing in around you
And I know that you don't have the strength to fight
But do you have the faith to stand and...

Believe Me now
Believe Me here
Remember all the times I've told you loud and clear
I am with you and I am for you
So believe Me now
Believe Me now

I am the One who waved my hand and split the ocean
I am the One who spoke the words and raised the dead
And I've loved you long before I set the world in motion
I know all the fears you're feeling now
But do you remember who I am?
Do you..

Believe Me now
Believe Me here
Remember all the times I've told you loud and clear
I am with you
And I am for you

So believe Me now
Believe it's true
I never have, I never will abandon you
And the God that I have always been
I will forever be
So believe Me now

I am the God who never wastes a single hurt that you endure
My words are true, and all My promises are sure
So believe Me now
Oh, believe Me now

We will participate in whatever way the Lord requires of us.

Right now, we are uplifting you and this need to Him.

I'm sorry that I have not read about your son sooner. This has really touched my heart. Like your son, I love the mission field. After reading this it has made me fall in love with it even more. I was reading the blogs and one of them reminded me a quote from a book that I have been reading, it's from "Blue Like Jazz" by Donald Miller and he says that "Living for something is easy, but dying for something is hard." Now, after reading this I have really been inspired and I thank you so much. Right now I am going to school at Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly, MO. My e-mail is acb393@cccb.edu. although i'm sure you haven't thought this way, but the lord provides gov't to protect us - st. v has insurance - have you considered suing them for the infection that entered the sights they processed - to pay for his care? this is not unchristian and would not come out of their pockets directly but out of insurance companies that have billions of dollars that we give them through all of our insurance payments and the interest they make on this money by investing in the stock market. plus they bump their hospital bills to pay their insurance premiums - you paid for it.

I work for the FSSA office in a local Medicaid office (including children's Hoosier Healthwise). They only count income for kids, not resources. Even if your income is extremely high, BJ should easily qualify for Medicaid for the Disabled (medically) though there might be a high cost (depending on your income), but $1000 a month to pay is far less than $1,000,000. PLEASE be sure to apply for Medicaid for the Disabled for him, not just the regular Hoosier Healthwise. Your income will be divided between the three of you (yourself, your wife, BJ) and then his income will be counted against the Medicaid income guideline. Anything over that will come out of your pocket towards medical expenses, but whatever that amount is has to be a more reasonable amount to pay off than $1,000,000.

Medicaid for the Disabled. They should be able to expedite his case and you should be able to have a decision within 48 hours after the Medicaid office receives his medical information from BJ's doctors.

Hope this helps!
Angela

Just read the other blogs & had more information. The HCI program is for emergency room visits only. So, you could apply for his initial emergency room visit and resulting hospitalization under this program, but it has to be filed within 45 days of the hospitalization. Also, the income guidelines there are similar to Medicaid's but there is no provision to pay out of pocket for the amount of your income that exceeds the income guidelines, so if you're over, you're over. Medicaid for the Disabled allows you to be over the income guideline, but you pay the excess out on your own (BJ's) medical expenses.

Higgins Family,

I know that it is no secret how much Mitchell loves BJ and looks up to him. This morning in his devotional it was in Matthew 5:11-12 about doing the right thing in Jesus' eyes even though you may persecuted. I used BJ as an example knowing that BJ took his bible to public school and often read it during study hall and other free times. He was picked on because of that and thought of as different. Mitchell asked this morning if he could take his bible to school and of course I let him. Bj tried so very hard to be like Jesus no matter what the cost and I am proud that BJ is still his hero.
We love you and are still praying for you. God used BJ in a mighty way and He will pave this path for the debt that has accrued.

Thinking of you today as you have to deal with the financial part of the last few months. I know it is a hassle and the absolute last thing you want to think about right now. I pray that you will receive the right advice and guidance with this and that St. V's might even find it in their hearts to write off some of this debt. That would definitely be a "God thing"! Take care and remember how much you are loved.

It would be frustrating dealing with this but again we know that God can and will be glorified in this situation. Nothing is to BIG for Him!
So many songs I hear remind me throughout the day of BJ and your situation, so know we continually lift you up in prayer.
Love,

To Nancy, in an above blog:

I interpreted Tara's comment about nurses to mean that she and Whitney would be GIVING free medical care to family members...I'm sure her motives are pure!

Dear Brent, Deanna & girls,
I am so sorry to hear that you are having to deal with the medical expenses already when you are trying to sort out everything else & wondering what to do next! Please know that you are brought to our minds often & we are still praying for you each new day & for each new struggle that you encounter. Praying that you can rest in the knowledge that many are still praying for you & the Lord hears his people's prayers.

Your BJ has inspired me to read John Piper's book, Don't Waste Your Life. I am only on the 3rd chapter but it has been very challenging already! Thank you for sharing about BJ's incredible walk with the Lord, it truely has impacted many! I saw this the other day & it made me think of BJ, hope it will brighten your day!

The Impact of One Life
by Roy Lessin

When a stone is dropped into a lake, it quickly disappears from sight- but it's impact leaves ripples behind that broaden & reach across the water.

In the same way, the life of one lived for Christ will leave behind an influence for good, that will reach the lives of many others.

We love you all & miss you!

Dearest Higgins Family;
My prayers are with you during what I am sure is a frustrating time for you all. I have been taught my whole entire life to turn things over to God that you feel is beyond your control and he will take care of it. I believe in his power and I know in my heart that he will take care of this for you as well. Still praying for your family daily.
Love,

I just have to comment. We've been praying for you and this morning at 4:30 a.m. my husband and I woke, discussed and prayed about helping your family financially. This was before I read your need today. I was writing your check as I was going to your site. God is working on many hearts.

Our prayers are with you.

You have touch my life immensely...I have had a lot going on lately with my own family of (12) children + grandchildren, so I just checked back in to see how BJ was doing. Needless to say, I cannot hold back the tears!! I had three of my children go on mission's trips and this hit me hard! My heart goes out to you, my prayers, and my anonymous love, that maybe is not so anonymous, as we are one in Christ! May God's love surround you and hold you close, increase your faith, and cause you to be a blessing to carry on BJ's work, until you are reunited! And may his memory bring you joy!!

It is amazing how God can provide. He is still in control :)

Lord, I have no doubt that You have a plan to erase this debt. It might be through the generosity of believers, or through the generosity of the hospital or some other way, but we know YOU will provide..Jehoval Jirah, my provider. But for now I ask You to replace fear with peace to replace doubt with confidence. I pray your Holy Spirit will continue to pour out comfort on this dear family. And I thank you for the vast number of people who are offering their knowledge of the "system" and how they might help. I love you Lord and I pray that You would continue to work on me, so that I might grow up in the Lord as young BJ did. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Hello Family
Earlier I read in a comment about you looking into suing ST V for the infection they may have accidently caused at sites of insertions during procedures needed. Well I AGREE!!!
This thought of "Unknown Infection"
has troubled me from the get go.
Also, I felt other than treatable pnomonia that "Yes" BJ probably contracted in his travels, The source of blood infection was contracted at Hospital.
Theese things do happen!
I will spare details of how 3 people in my life were taken from us.
They did die from staff infections turned sepsis. BJ sufferd all the symptoms as the others did as well.
I do not want to offend the caretakers of BJ. And I assure you, I mean no disrespect what so ever.
BUT, Equipment used, can be tainted.
And, it is my understanding, {through experience of chronic lung
issues in myself}
Puenomnia compromises your immune system. Airways are constricted and suseptible to trap germs that an otherwise healthy person could filter out.
Therfore, any unsterile equipment,
and even a doctors White Lab Coat,
maybe the carrier of strep or staff.

I PRAY you have the srength to seek a medical malpractice attorney.
It would be so unfair for the ministry to suffer missionaries,
taking Blame that Beej contracted some unkown infection on his trip.
I Love You Family
I hope you seek answers.
Answers you deserve, although no actions taken will bring BJ back to us, answers you deserve!
Dear Lord
Please show our Higgins family the way, with an abundance of strength and peace in their hearts.
Thank You Lord

I know you are waiting on the Lord to straighten these financial issues out, but if the Lord chooses, we your family, are willing to give what ever we are able to help you with this burden. I know you are not asking but we are offering.

Deanna,
I am praying the LOrd will give you the strength you will need to get on with out BJ. There is one thing that comes to mind, that is you won't have new memories with BJ but you have a whole world that won't let BJ be forgotten. There will be memories that will be brought up from someone that knew him and shared an awesome moment with you. It is just a different kind of memory. We can't forget BJ nor will we want to.
In my prayers, indianapolis
