Last night, the doctor called Deanna and me into his office to discuss BJ's condition. His words were something like..."I'm not saying he has a 0% chance of making it"...he went on to prepare us (as is his job) that BJ's condition was not good, and basically conveyed that we needed to begin preparing to lose him as he wasn't sure he'd do well overnight.

It was a tremendous low point, and very difficult to cope. What a miraculous turn of events today!

By no means is BJ "out of the woods." We have infection to fight, organs that aren't functioning properly, a lung that has serious issues...But my God is AMAZING, isn't He?

As I write, the doctor is trying to get a central line in (to administer meds through). Remember, a surgeon also tried for over an hour the other day and was unsuccessful. Beej has experienced significant swelling, making it tough to do. If he is successful tonight we can get rid of at least one canula still in his body.

I cannot begin to express the depth of our appreciation to our Lord and Savior, and to each of you! Please...worship Him! Do it tonight, but definitely do it tomorrow morning. HE IS WORTHY!!!

Beej's dad

ps. We would greatly appreciate it if your blogs would include your name and state/country. We are trying to track this for BJ, on a map. THANKS!

Brent, Deanna & girls, as I was driving home from the hospital tonight, this song was playing and the words struck me as exactly what we had experienced today:

Healing rain, it comes with fire
So let it fall and take us higher
And only You the Son of Man
Can take a leper and let him stand
So lift your hands, they can be held
By someone greater, the Great I Am

Lifting my hands tonight to the One and Only . . .may the fire that has fallen into our lives do a great refining and may the name of Jesus be praised!
Continuing in prayer, all our love, carol

One moment at a time... and we praise God for those! I have been following BJ's fight and my continued prayers are with him. By way of this blog BJ has become a son to all of us. My heart and prayers have been with you in BJ's hospital room today. When I read your earlier post about his increased oxygen levels and the miracle of his blood not clotting in the ECMO pump, I was shouting praises to God.

As I was driving my car tonight the words of a song kept going over in my mind. I found myself singing it half in English and half in Russian (I'll put the English words!!).

You are awesome in this place, Mighty God
You are awesome in this place, Abba Father
You are worthy of all praise
To You our lives we raise
You are awesome in this place, Mighty God

I heard a group once since this chorus in a medley and then go into the following that also expresses my praise to the Father:

Let Jesus be exalted in this place
I can feel His power here today
Holy Spirit, take control
And bring sweet peace within my soul
We give thanks to You, O God
For the mercy You have shown
Blessed is Your name!
Blessed is Your name!
Blessed is Your name!
Let Jesus be exalted!!!

I thank God for where He has brought you in the past 24 hours, and am trusting with you for His will to continue to be done in BJ's life and body in the days and weeks ahead.

Sending a big hug to you all,

Becky

Brent, Deanna & Girls,

Checking again to see the updates, so glad it is still good news. I have been singing the same song in my head as Carol- Healing Rain, very appropriate for the situation.
Keeping everyone in our prayers tonight, not letting up. Will pray that the doc's can get a good central line access in. Also that his organs start functioning properly and that lung of his straightens itself out! Especially praying that you all get some sleep and well needed rest tonight! Love you guys.

Dear ones, All three of my children and I continue to pray for you throughout each day, and as so many are doing, we check for updates often. Ashley was with B.J.'s team in Peru two summers ago, and Emily (now in college) was in Peru the summer before. They have both spread word of B.J. and appeals for prayer through cell phone, posters on lockers and in halls, through FCA, and on their sites. Son, Nathan, shares his computer and scanner to make all this possible.

It means so much to be able to join with so many in prayer. We will continue to pray through the night and over the next days for B.J. to gain strength throughout his body as necessary procedures are done. May all of you get good rest tonight, and we will worship and praise our Lord for His miraculous work.

What a sweet fellowship--the "pray for BJ (except it's really pray for BJ and family!)club"!

How many times I have logged on and read comments that mirrored my own prayers and thoughts. This has been an amazing testimony of the Holy Spirit's work. . .and I know will continue to be so. We must not let down our guard in praying for this special servant of Christ and what I can tell is an amazingly loving and faithful family even in the midst of what must be incredible weariness. We count ourselves privileged to hold up your arms, Brent, Deanna, Lauren and Whitney!

I have identified myself before as an Awe Star mom. Katherine (sr. in high school) went to Hungary/Romania and later to Mexico in 2003, and Kristen (sophomore in college) went to Peru in 2003, returning to Trujillo and Pacasmayo the next year on a church mission trip. It has been neat to see postings from our dear friends the Lamcas and Pastor Tito here. Thank you ALL for blessing our family by praying and posting. Thank you, Awesome Lord, for your sovereign work in BJ's life. May you continue to shine through Him. . .and (How about some Casting Crowns, p & w people), may his "life song" continue to sing to You!

A map is such a cool idea! You should take a verse from John 17 about unity in the body and put it in somehow. Deanna and Brent--your son, whom I've never met, has been such a blessing to me over this last week. I've been feeling discouraged about the church lately, because it seems like we're either ignoring each other or arguing about something. This blog has shown me that God is indeed alive and at work in His people, and while we may disagree on certain doctrines or political issues, He is able to help us overcome our differences and unite around the only thing that really matters: Jesus. I'm thankful for Jesus, and I'm thankful for BJ, who is in Jesus.

Dear Bj's family,
We miss you at church. At my school next door, I go to religious education and we had this verse that I am to study this week and when I was sitting in religious ed room, I looked up at the right hand corner and I saw BJ. I prayed this verse for him and it is Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understand. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3: 5 and 6.
I will study my verse everyday and in that verse I will be praying for BJ and your family.
BJ I hope to see you back at chruch soon. Also, your sisters and your mom and dad.

We praise our God for what He is doing in our lives through yours. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. We only met BJ in passing as he brought our daughters bag to the car after she returned from Panama, but we feel like we know your family very well. We pray for your family countless times throughout the day and night. In chapel on Friday, we were singing "How Great Is Our God", and God brought BJ to my memory. He is a GREAT and AWESOME GOD!!! Last Thursday, before we were able to get your updates, I told my husband that I felt BJ was going to be taken off the ECMO machine. I told him that God is a jealous God and will not share His Glory with anyone, much less a machine. We got home that evening to find out that BJ was going to be taken off the machine. We continue to tell people about this blog and to faithfully pray for our brother and your family.

Dear Higgins Family:
Last week in church, our Pastor encouraged us to pray for the ABC's. He said to think of someone for each letter of the alphabet. With BJ so close to the front of the alaphabet, I would get so consumed praying for him that I would forget to carry on with the other letters! :) As a parent, we never like to see our children suffer and I'm sure this has been very difficult for the two of you. I was thinking of Mary who had to watch her son suffer and then die for us. Wow...it puts things in a little more perspective for me. Of course we know the rest of the story that Jesus arose and because of that, we now have eternal life as believers. Although BJ can not take our sins away and give us eternal life, he certainly has a heart for missions that he can share the love of our Jesus who can do those things for the lost. I have prayed so selfishly that God would just heal his body completely and quickly so that BJ may go out and not only share with unbelievers but show that he is a miracle of God. We will continue to pray for your family and we love you.
